Topic 4:  Memory, Improving Concentration & Reading System

I want to share what I have learn in study skills class for module 4. This module was conducted by Madam Azlina. In this module, I have learn many things about memory and concentration.

Memory Strategies

What is memory?
  • The ability to remember past experiences and the power or process of recalling to mind previously learned facts, experiences impressions, skills and habits
  • Having a good memory involves both putting information into memory and getting it back out
  • Memory is complex and consists of various processes and stages.
Three types of memory
  • Sensory memory - remember something by using memory
  • Short-term memory - remember something just for 30 sec to 24 hours
  • Long-term memory - remember something for long time
How forgetting could occur?
  • Did not pay attention to the information
  • Did not understand the information
  • Cramming (last minute study)
  • Did not have good strategies
  • Interference
  • Test anxiety

The ways to improve our memory

Organizational Strategies

What is organizational?
Organizational strategies allow to organize the information to make it easier to learn and recall. Tasks such as listing, ordering, grouping, outlining, mapping, charting and diagramming are all examples of organizational strategies.

Concentration Strategies

What is concentration?
Concentration means focusing your attention on what you are doing.

What is causes of poor concentration?
  • Lack of attention
  • Lack of interest
  • Lack of motivation
  • Distraction from others
  • Uncomfortable environment
  • Physiological matters - illness, tiredness
  • Psychological matters - personal problems, worries and anxieties
Strategies to improve concentration

  • Use motivational and organizational strategies
  • Create a positive learning environment
  • Deal with internal distractions
  • Use active learning strategies
  • Match your learning style to the task
  • Monitor your concentration
Concentration Chart

How it works?

  1. Put a check mark or write the time in the margin of our book or our lecture notes everytime we’re distracted.
  2. At the end of class session, count the number of interruptions.
  3. Make a commitment to reduce that number the next we read or go to our lecture.
  4. When we notice that we are daydreaming or thinking about other things, try to figure out what actually triggered your loss in concentration.
  5. Remember, we can improve our ability to concentrate, but it is us who must take responsibility for doing so.
This is my concentration chart for my interim week.

Reading Skills

Topic 5: Taking Lecture Notes
Why student must take the lecture notes? It is because as a human, we always forget about what we have done, and what we have learn. For your information, only 10 percent of an audio lecture may last in memory but students who take and review their notes can recall about 80% of a lecture. Research suggests that physical writing activates regions of the brain that involve thinking, language and working memory.

How to take lecture notes? We need to read the text assignment before class. In addition, we can build up some background about the topic. It will give you the opportunity to become familiar with the main topics that will be presented. Other than that, become an active listener are physically and mentally focused on the lecture.

Topic 6: Academic Integrity & Performance

Plagiarism
Plagiarism is an act of using or closely imitating the language and thoughts of another author without authorization and the representation of that author’s work as one’s own, as by not crediting the original author.

The following are considered plagiarism:

  • copying words or ideas from someone else without giving credit

  • giving incorrect information about the source of a quotation
  • changing words but copying the sentence structure of a source without giving credit
  • copying so many words or ideas from a source that it makes up the majority of your work, whether you give credit or no

What is CGPA?

In this module, I have learnt how to calculate the GPA and CGPA. GPA is stand for Grade Point Average while CGPA stand for Cumulative Grade Point Average.

CGPA refers to the overall GPA, which includes dividing the number of quality points earned in all courses attempted by the total credit hours in all attempted courses. The formula is :

How to Calculate GPA and CGPA:

Academic Status

My Calculation GPA and CGPA:

So my CGPA for three semester that I took is
